Wayne State University, founded in 1868, is committed to preparing its students to excel in a fast-paced and interconnected global society. It combines the academic excellence of a major research university with the practical experiences of an institution whose history, location and diversity make it a microcosm of the world students will enter when they graduate. Wayne State is Michigan's only urban research university. Located in Midtown Detroit, it contributes significantly to the city's progress and positive ambience. Reflecting its location and the excellent international reputation of its graduate schools, particularly in the sciences, Wayne State boasts an enrollment of nearly 29,000 students and the most diverse student body among Michigan's public universities. The university is comprised of a main campus in Detroit and five extension centers throughout the metropolitan area. Offering more than 370 degrees and certificates from 13 schools and colleges, Wayne State University is a nationally recognized urban center of excellence in research and one of only two urban public universities to hold both the Carnegie "Very High Research" and "Community Engagement" designations. WSU is among the nation's top public universities for total research expenditures, totaling more than $250 million. Wayne State students are not only part of a richly diverse learning and social community-- the university is also at the forefront of the globalization movement in higher education, with a wealth of opportunities for internationally themed coursework and study-abroad programs. Wayne State supports the conviction that American society is infinitely strengthened by the participation of people from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Such participation ideally begins with the ability of higher education to assist persons of all cultures, races and backgrounds to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to function in the broader community as responsible, productive citizens. Like any great public research university, Wayne State's three most recognized contributions to society are practical services to the broader community; an educated, informed workforce; and the creation and application of new knowledge that spans the globe. Through programs, partnerships, research and the talents of its alumni, Wayne State University plays an influential role in educational, social, cultural and economic life throughout Michigan and in every corner of the world.
